Electric power is the basis of the American economy and our way of life. The US power grid is the largest machine ever built and delivers these capabilities real-time. But the power grid is under stress from a myriad of challenges including: AI driven datacenters, intermittent renewables, storage, transportation electrification, ageing infrastructure, severe weather and cyber threats. The grid of the future will need to grow and evolve to accommodate these needs, and as an industry we lack most of the things we need to keep pace. We lack the workforce, capital, cost controls, materials, and time to get it all done. The challenge of building a clean, flexible, reliable, and cost-efficient grid is mammoth. So somehow AI is going to have to scale the impact of our accessible workforce, accelerate optimal design and construction, and reimagine operating and defending the grid. The bad news is, AI factories are accelerating these challenges. The good news is, AI is actually helping us solve them too.
